CPD Event: Evening Talk - "DIVERSITY versus BIAS - MANAGING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS IN THE FIELD OF ARBITRATION AND ADR"
With the inevitable interdependence of countries in international trade and the vast number of jurisdictions acceding to the New York Convention, there has been increasing diversity in the geographical and cultural backgrounds of parties to arbitrations and mediations. This is creating increased demand for arbitrators with diverse experience, expertise and cultures.
The role of women and those of other racial and cultural backgrounds, traditionally very limited, is expanding as parties realize the benefits of diverse panels. But progress is slow. Not only are there old stereotypes and prejudices to overcome; many of us are unaware of the role of our own “blind spots” in maintaining the status quo and slowing the progress of diversity.
What is unconscious bias and why we should worry about it? Our presenters will discuss the psychology of unconscious bias, types of unconscious bias and methods of dealing with it. They will focus particularly on the biases encountered daily in arbitration and strategies for dealing with them on a daily basis.
