Cross-Sector Mediation Forum: “Decoding the Mediator Selection Process: Gaining Insights into Being the Chosen One” (2017)

This forum is organized by the Commercial Mediation Interest Group of the Hong Kong Mediation Council (“HKMC”), a division of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (“HKIAC”).

Perhaps unknown to many accredited mediators in Hong Kong, different private sectors and institutional/special sectors have their own selection criteria in appointing a mediator. Among them are the Legal/ ADR, Corporate, Insurance and Construction fields from private sectors, and the Housing Authority, Financial Dispute Resolution Centre, Joint Mediation Helpline Office and HK Family Welfare Society from the institutional/ special sectors. It is amazing how they may differ in the characteristics they look for in a mediator and the ‘why’ and ‘what’ factors which may affect whom they choose and appoint.
